[The click of a data stick being inserted into a port, and whirring as the disc is read.]
The Traveller
Oh, good. It's working. [sighs] I haven't used this recorder for a while. I felt it would be wise to check it was still in good order after so long in storage. Besides, it seemed a better use of my time than lying awake all night, strung tight with anticipation. [laughs weakly]
I have also repacked my luggage several times, double and triple checked my travel papers, my permits, my letters of introduction… [laughs] I've even taken this recorder and my camera to pieces and put them back together again, just to reassure myself that I will be able to repair them if I have to.
In short, I am being ridiculous! [laughs] I am not abandoning civilisation. The entire purpose of this journey is civilisation – to go out and meet the galaxy and its people, to walk among them, see their worlds, collect their stories. And there will be shops in these unknown worlds! I can buy a new camera if needs be.
[sighs] I leave for the port tomorrow, and from there… onwards. I do not know when I shall return. I do not know if return is even possible. Perhaps I will walk through these doors again in however many years' time. But by then… I will be so changed. So other than what I was. What I am. Could I even call that coming home?
So, yes! Little wonder sleep is hard to come by. If my ruminations are of no interest to the community archives, please, don't feel obliged to keep them. I shall leave this data stick behind and you may archive it or wipe it clean for reuse, whichever you please.
Only, please – think of me, while I am gone? I feel I will need it.
